Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) Web Interface in OpenSolaris May Lead to Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and HTTP Response Splitting Attacks
1. Impact
The web interface of the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) in versions
1.4.1 and earlier is impacted by multiple security vulnerabilities which
may lead to Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and HTTP Response Splitting
Attacks. These vulnerabilities could allow an unprivileged local
or remote user (depending on the CUPS configuration), to inject malicious
client-side scripts or HTML into the CUPS web interface page.
These issues are also described in the following document:
2. Contributing Factors
These issues can occur in the following releases:
SPARC Platform
- OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_87 or later
x86 Platform
- OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_87 or later
Notes:
1. Solaris 8, 9, and 10 are not impacted by these issues.
2. OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and
beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build
can be derived as follows:
$ uname -v
snv_101
3. These vulnerabilities only affect OpenSolaris systems which have
installed the CUPS package (SUNWcups). The SUNWcups package is not
installed by default. To determine if the SUNWcups package is
installed, the following command can be run:
$ pkg info SUNWcups
4. These vulnerabilities only affect OpenSolaris systems which have
configured and enabled CUPS for printing. To determine if the CUPS has
been enabled, the following command can be run:
$ svcs cups/in-lpd
STATE STIME FMRI
enabled 20:03:32 svc:/application/cups/in-lpd:default
5. These vulnerabilities only affect CUPS versions 1.4.1 and earlier. To
determine the version of CUPS on the system the following command can
be run:
$ cups-config --version
1.4.1
3. Symptoms
There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described
vulnerabilities have been exploited.
4. Workaround
To prevent these issues from occurring, the CUPS services may be configured to disable access
to
the CUPS web interface
by doing the following:
1. Comment out the following line from '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf':
Listen localhost:631
(or)
Port 631
2. Restart the cups/scheduler services:
# svcadm restart cups/in-lpd
# svcadm restart cups/scheduler
Binary relief is available via
the normal support channels.
Note: The fix for this issue will not result in a change of CUPS version to 1.4.2.
5. Resolution
A final resolution is pending completion.
