Two Race Condition Vulnerabilities in the Solaris Event Port API May Allow Local Users to Panic the System, Causing a Denial of Service (DoS)

1. Impact

Two race condition vulnerabilities in the Solaris Event Port API may allow a local unprivileged user to panic the system, which is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

These issues can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform:
  • Solaris 10 without patch 141414-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_106
x86 Platform:
  • Solaris 10 without patch 141415-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_106
Note: Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 are not impacted by these issues.

OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be derived as follows:
$ uname -v
snv_86
3. Symptoms

If the described issues occur, the system may panic with a stack trace similar to one of the following:
unix:panicsys+0x48()
unix:vpanic_common+0x78()
unix:panic+0x1c()
unix:mutex_enter()
portfs:port_associate_fd+0x2d4()
portfs:portfs+0x234()
unix:syscall_trap32+0xcc()
pollhead_delete+0x40()
port_remove_fd_object+0x38()
port_dissociate_fd+0x118()
portfs+0x350()
syscall_trap32+0x1e8()

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for these issues. Please see the Resolution section below.

5. Resolution

These issues are addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform:
  • Solaris 10 with patch 141414-01 or later
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_107 or later
x86 Platform:
  • Solaris 10 with patch 141415-01 or later
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_107 or later
