Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in Mozilla Thunderbird Versions Prior to 2.0.0.19 May Allow Execution of Arbitrary Code or Unauthorized Access to Data
1. Impact
Multiple security vulnerabilities in thunderbird(1) versions prior to
2.0.0.19 shipped with Solaris 10 may allow an unprivileged remote user
to take any of the following actions:
- Execute arbitrary code on the system
where thunderbird(1) is being run
- Gain unauthorized access to sensitive data
- Perform Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks to bypass access controls
Certain vulnerabilities may also allow a user to crash the
thunderbird(1) application, which is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).
The following URL provides additional details about the vulnerabilities
addressed in Thunderbird versions prior to 2.0.0.19:
The following CVEs describe these issues in more detail:
2. Contributing Factors
These issues can occur in the following releases:
SPARC Platform
- Thunderbird 2.0 (for Solaris 10) without patch 125541-04
- OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_48 through snv_104
x86 Platform
- Thunderbird 2.0 (for Solaris 10) without patch 125542-04
- OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_48 through snv_104
Note: Solaris 8 and Solaris 9
do not ship Mozilla Thunderbird and therefore are not affected by these
issues.
OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and
beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be
derived as follows:
$ uname -v
snv_101
3. Symptoms
There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described
issues have been exploited.
4. Workaround
Until the resolution patches can be applied, this issue may be worked
around by disabling JavaScript on the affected systems. To disable
JavaScript in Mozilla Thunderbird, the following steps may be used:
1. Open the 'Preferences' dialog from
the Edit menu.
2. Select the 'Advanced' tab
3. Select the 'General' tab.
4. Click on the 'Config Editor' button.
5. In the 'about:config' dialog that opens up, there will be a 'Filter'
box.
6. Type 'javascript.allow.mailnews' in the Filter box.
7. Double click the property and set its value to 'false'.
5. Resolution
These issues are addressed in the following releases:
SPARC Platform
- Thunderbird 2.0 (for Solaris 10) with patch 125541-04 or later
- OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_105 or later
x86 Platform
- Thunderbird 2.0 (for Solaris 10) with patch 125542-04 or later
- OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_105 or later
