Category :Security
Release Phase :Resolved
Bug Id :6717680, 6737315
Date of Resolved Release :24-Mar-2009
Product :Java Platform, Standard Edition 6 (Java SE 6)

Security vulnerabilities in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) LDAP implementation may allow a Denial of Service (DoS) and malicious code to be executed:

1. Impact

CR 6717680:

A security vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) with initializing LDAP connections may be exploited by a remote client to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition on the LDAP service.

CR 6737315:
A security vulnerability in Java Runtime Environment LDAP client implementation may allow malicious data from an LDAP server to cause malicious code to be unexpectedly loaded and executed on an LDAP client.

2. Contributing Factors

These issues can occur in the following Java SE and Java SE for Business releases for Windows, Solaris, and Linux:
  • JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 17 and earlier
  • JDK and JRE 6 Update 12 and earlier
and in the following Java SE for Business release for Windows, Solaris, and Linux:
  • SDK and JRE 1.4.2_19 and earlier
and in the following Java SE release for Windows and Solaris:
  • SDK and JRE 1.3.1_24 and earlier
To determine the version of Java installed on a system, the following command can be used:
    % java -version
java version "1.5.0_17
To determine the default version of the JRE that Internet Explorer uses, see the following URL:
To determine the default version of the JRE that Mozilla or Firefox browsers use, visit the URL "about:plugins". The browser will display a page called "Installed plug-ins" which lists the version of the Java Plug-in:
    Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U11
In this example, the version of the JRE that the browser uses is 6 Update 11.

3. Symptoms

If the issue described in CR 6717680 occurs, the LDAP service may be unresponsive.
There are no reliable symptoms that would indicate the issue described in CR 6737315 has been exploited.
