Product :Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0
Date of Resolved Release :12-Aug-2008

Security vulnerability in the FTP subsystem of Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0

1. Impact

A Security vulnerability in the FTP subsystem of Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to prevent the proxy server from accepting new connections, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) to the proxy server.

Sun acknowledges, with thanks, Joxean Koret for bringing this issue to our attention.

2. Contributing Factors

This issues can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without Service Pack 6
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without patch 120981-14
x86 Platform
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without Service Pack 6
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without patch 120982-14
Linux
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without Service Pack 6
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without patch 120983-14
HP-UX
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without Service Pack 6
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without patch 123532-04
Windows
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without Service Pack 6
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 without patch 126325-04
To determine the version of Sun Java System Web Proxy Sever, run the following command:
$ <ps_install>/bin/proxy/bin/proxyd -v
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0.6 B05/12/2007 13:24
(Where <ps_install> is the installation directory of the Proxy Server).

3. Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, Proxy server stops accepting new connections with the following error message in the proxy server instance's "access" log file:
[03/Mar/2008:02:10:35] failure (32372): HTTP3069: Error accepting
connection (PR_PROC_DESC_TABLE_FULL_ERROR: file descriptor table full)

4. Workaround

If this issue has been exploited on a server, it may be possible to recover from the Denial of Service (DoS) condition by restarting the server. This can be done by using the following command:
    $<ps_install>/<ps_instance/restart
(Where <ps_install> is the installation directory of the Proxy Server, and <ps_instance> is the Proxy Server instance directory).

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 with Service Pack 6 or later
  • Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0 through 4.0.5 with patch 120981-14 or later
