A Security Vulnerability in Solaris 10 Involving the SCTP Protocol


1. Impact

A security vulnerability in Solaris 10 related to the SCTP protocol (see sctp(7P)) may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to cause significant performance degradation or hang the system or network devices, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) condition.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Solaris 10 without patch 127127-08
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 10 without patch 127128-08

3. Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, excessive network traffic is generated in response to certain incoming SCTP packets (see sctp(7P))  which should be ignored. This may result in the flooding of the network.

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below.

5. Resolution

This issue is resolved in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Solaris 10 with patch 127127-08 or later
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 10 with patch 127128-08 or later
