Security Vulnerabilities in ImageMagick May Lead to Arbitrary Code Execution or Denial of Service (DoS)

Category :Security
Release Phase :Resolved
Product :Solaris 9 Operating System, Solaris 10 Operating System
Bug Id :6387973, 6387975, 5106135
Date of Resolved Release :30-JAN-2008

Security Vulnerabilities in ImageMagick May Lead to Arbitrary Code Execution or Denial of Service (DoS) (see details below)

1. Impact

Multiple security vulnerabilities have been found in the ImageMagick utilities bundled with Solaris 9 and Solaris 10. These vulnerabilities may allow a local or remote user who provides files that are processed by ImageMagick to execute arbitrary shell commands or code as the user running ImageMagick, or to cause ImageMagick to crash, which is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

These issues are also referenced in the following documents:

CVE-2005-4601 at http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2005-4601

CVE-2006-0082 at http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-0082

CVE-2004-0827 at http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2004-0827

2. Contributing Factors

These issues can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

x86 Platform

Note: Solaris 8 does not include support for ImageMagick and is not impacted by these issues. Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 are not affected by bug 5106135, which only affects Solaris 9.

3. Symptoms

There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described issues have been exploited to execute arbitrary code or shell commands. If these issues are exploited to cause a Denial of Service (DoS), the ImageMagick process may crash.

4. Relief/Workaround

There is no work around for these issues. Please see the Resolution section below.

5. Resolution

These issues are addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

x86 Platform
