Sun Blade 1500 Workstation's (Red) Power Supply Units (PSU) Within a Certain Date Code Range Might Experience a Thermal Event if the PSU Fails

Category :Availability
Release Phase :Resolved
Product :Sun Blade 1500 Workstation
Bug Id :6186802
Date of Workaround Release :03-NOV-2004
Date of Resolved Release :16-AUG-2005

Impact

Sun Blade 1500s (Red) that use Power Supply Units (PSU) manufactured within a specific date code range may be vulnerable to a thermal event if the PSU fails.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platform:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Blade 1500 Workstation (Red)

All Sun Blade 1500 workstations (Red) manufactured prior to 26-May-2005 are affected. The Sun Blade 1500 Silver workstations (Taco+) are not affected by this issue.

This means that any Sun Blade 1500 (Red) workstation with a system serial number (SN) of xT52170000 or lower is affected.

To decode the affected serial number :

    xT52170000
      ^^^

The first two characters, "xT", will be ST or MT or UT. The third character "5" is for the year 2005. The forth and fifth characters, "21", represent the week in the year.

So any SN with the 3rd, 4th and 5th characters of "521" and lower is affected.

Legend:

    S, M, U : SEC GCC Location
    T : Taco product (not Taco+)
y : Last digit of the year
    ww : week number
    d : day of the week (Monday:1 ~ Sunday: 7 )
xxxx : Serial Number assigned to the system.

Sun Blade 1500 (Red) workstations running at 110V are more susceptible than those running at 220V.

Note: The Taco+ will have a different 2nd character.

Symptoms

If the PSU fails, a thermal event might occur, resulting in a loss of power, a burning smell, or, in some cases, smoke.

Workaround

A workaround is not available.
