Date of Resolved Release :21-DEC-2004

Impact

Replacing an expander board on a Sun Fire 12K/15K/20K/25K system may result in a complete platform outage (Global Dstop) when the new expander board is inserted or powered on.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Fire 12K/15K with System Management Software (SMS) 1.2 and earlier
  • Sun Fire 12K/15K with System Management Software (SMS) 1.3 and without patch 114640-17
  • Sun Fire 12K/15K with System Management Software (SMS) 1.4
  • Sun Fire 12K/15K/20K/25K with System Management Software (SMS) 1.4.1 and without patch 118051-03

The described issue may be brought about by any of the following:

  1. The use of the breakers to power off an expander board. Breakers should never be used in this manner.
  2. Internal power failure on an expander board.
  3. Powering off an expander board in a running domain despite the issued warning.

Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, upon insertion or power on of the replacement expander board, "Dstop" messages similar to the following may be observed in the platform messages log:

Domain Stop interrupt detected, domain "X"

Workaround

There is no workaround. Please see the "Resolution" section below.
