Impact
Installing Solaris 9 Sun Fire V440 Server platform support patches 115663-01 through 115663-03 may cause the "/etc/driver_classes" file to be overwritten by, rather than appended with, the "driver_classes" file included in the patch. As a result, certain devices may no longer be recognized by the Solaris Operating System.
Note: If the "/etc/driver_classes" file has been modified since system installation, those changes will be lost.
Contributing Factors
This issue can occur in the following releases:
SPARC Platform
Note: Solaris on the x86 platform is not affected.
Symptoms
Should the described issue occur, if devices are attached to the Host Bus Adapter (HBA) and patch 115663-03 is installed, the server may not be able to see the attached devices because "jnfca fibre-channel" and/or "qus scsi" entries are not present in the new version of the "/etc/driver_aliases" file.
Workaround
Sun Fire V440 Server platform support patches 115663-01 through 115663-03 can be installed safely with the following recommendations:
1. Before patch installation, preserve the contents of the "/etc/driver_classes" file.
2. After patch installation, merge the preserved copy of "/etc/driver_classes" file into the "/etc/driver_classes" file that was created during the patch installation.
Note: If Patch 115663-01 through 115663-03 are already installed, and the system cannot "see" attached devices, the device entries must be manually entered into the "/etc/driver_classes" file.
In both cases, once the "/etc/driver_classes" file has been edited, a reconfiguration reboot (-r) must be initiated.
