Sun Java Workstations W1100z/W2100z May Shutdown During SCSI Adapter Initialization

Sun Java Workstation W1100z
Bug Id :6318789
Date of Resolved Release :03-NOV-2005

Impact

The h/w monitor on the Sun Java Workstation W1100z/W2100z may incorrectly detect "0 RPM" causing the system to shut down. This may result in an unnecessary fan replacement.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms:

  • Sun Java Workstation W1100z/W2100z with bios R01B3S1 (found on supplemental CD 1.3) or bios R01B4S0 (found on supplemental CD 2.0) and without bios R01B4S3 (found on the Supplemental CD 2.2)

Note: The bios R01B4S2 (found on supplemental CD 2.1), address the false fan readings, however may result in a small amount of Chassis fans (370-7716) to cause all the system fans to "pulse". During this "pulse", mouse and keyboard activity may become sluggish.

Both the false fan readings and the "pulse" issue are addressed with bios R01B4S3 (found on the Supplemental CD 2.2).

Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, the system will shut down at initial power-on during SCSI adapter initialization. The Fault light on the front bezel will be illuminated, as well as the rear fan fault led on the mother board. The "dmilog" will show an entry similar to the following:

    10/29/2005 15:36:12 System rear fan1 fault
