DVD and CDR/W Drives on Sun Blade 2500 May Not Power Up

Impact

Due to incorrect jumper settings, DVD and CDR/W drives on Sun Blade 2500 systems that were shipped between 01-Mar-2004 and 01-May-2004, may not power up after the workstation recovers from "Power Management Mode".


Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platform:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Blade 2500

This issue only occurs on Sun Blade 2500 systems (shipped between 01-Mar-2004 and 01-May-2004) that have the jumper setting on the drive set to "Slave" or "Cable Select".

Note: Drives with the jumper set to "Master" will not experience this issue.

To verify if a system is vulnerable to this issue, a visual inspection of the drive is required to determine the jumper settings.


Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, messages similar to the following are logged to "/var/adm/messages" file:

    <date> <system>: [ID 568058 kern.warning] WARNING: Drive not ready before
    set_features
    <date> <system> last message repeated 2 times
    <date> <system>: [ID 352328 kern.warning] WARNING: ata_controller 
    - Can not reset Secondary channel
    <date> <system>: [ID 405830 kern.warning] WARNING: Device sd30 failed to
    power up.
    <date> <system>: [ID 749148 kern.warning] WARNING: Please see your system
    administrator or reboot

Workaround

To work around the described issue, change the jumper setting on the drive to "Master" by doing the following:

  1. Refer to the back panel of the drive for the jumper setting map
  2. Remove the jumper from the "Slave" or "Cable Select" setting and move it to the "Master"configuration
  3. Reboot the system

Resolution

This issue has been addressed and the jumper settings have been corrected on all drives shipped after 01-May-2004.
