Category :Availability
Release Phase :Resolved
Product :Sun Fire 12K Server
Sun Fire E20K Server
Sun Fire 15K Server
Sun Fire E25K Server
Bug Id :6211443
Date of Workaround Release :13-JAN-2005
Date of Resolved Release :18-FEB-2005

Impact

Due to initialization issues between Systems Management Software (SMS) and Net Connect 3.1.1, the failover function will not work (state will be set to FAILED) and component indictment events will not be passed to Net Connect when Net Connect 3.1.1 is installed but not activated.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Solaris 8 or 9 Systems running Systems Management Software (SMS) 1.4 or 1.4.1 and Net Connect 3.1.1, without patch 118946-01

on the following platforms:

  • Sun Fire 12K, 15K
  • Enterprise 20K, 25K

Notes:

  1. SMS versions 1.2 and 1.3 are not affected by this issue.
  2. This issue only occurs when Net Connect is installed but not activated.
  3. Only the system controllers are affected by this issue and not the domains themselves.

To determine if Net Connect has been activated on one of the above mentioned systems, the following command can be run:

    % ps -ef|grep srsproxy
    ncuser 422 1 0 Jan 03 ? 5:07 /opt/SUNWsrspx/bin/srsproxy

Symptoms

SMS is not fully functional when the SMS "erd" daemon does not restart on the system controller. An error message will be returned similar to the following:

    #Dec 18 11:12:35 2004 uscitd10 ssd[1410]: [1311 597409556414 WARNING
#StartupManager.cc 2848] software component failed to respond: name=erd
    #Dec 18 11:12:35 2004 uscitd10 ssd[1410]: [1306 597410616543 WARNING
    #StartupManager.cc 2850] software component start-up failed: name=erd
    #Dec 18 11:12:35 2004 uscitd10 ssd[1410]: [1308 597411130235 WARNING
#StartupManager.cc 2851] software component hard shutdown initiated:
    #name=erd, signal=SIGKILL

Workaround

To work around the described issue, do either of the following:

A) Make sure that Net Connect is activated (see "Contributing Factors" above). If Net Connect has not been activated, please see instructions for activation in the "NetConnnect Activation Guide" found at http://docs-pdf.sun.com/819-0619/819-0619.pdf.

or:

B) Remove the "SUNWsrspx" package from the platform.

It is recommended to follow the uninstall process in the "SRS Net Connect 3.1.1 Customer Installation Guide" found at http://docs.sun.com/source/817-2390-01/chapter3.html#33044.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Solaris 8 or 9 Systems running Systems Management Software (SMS) 1.4 or 1.4.1 and Net Connect 3.1.1, with patch 118946-01 or later
