Impact
After upgrading the firmware on a Sun Fire Server V880/V880Z/V890 to 4.15.4 with patch 112186-18, POST may cause a system hang or "Red State" exception errors.
Firmware Patch 112186-18 has been WITHDRAWN and is no longer available from SunSolve. Although this patch can still be found on the Diagnostic Boot CD (DBCD) 2.11, it should not be installed. Please discard the DBCD version and download the new version from the SPE web site at:
Note: This issue will be masked and the system will run fine if POST was not initiated after the firmware upgrade. However, the system remains vulnerable to this issue and may fail when POST is run.
Contributing Factors
This issue can occur in the following releases:
-
Sun Fire V880/V880Z/V890 with firmware patch 112186-18 (firmware 4.15.4) and without patch 112186-19 (firmware 4.15.6)
Symptoms
If the described issue occurs, the system will hang and/or experience "Red State" exception error messages when POST is executed.
Workaround
To avoid this issue, do not install patch 112186-18 (firmware 4.15.4).
If patch 112186-18 has already been installed, and POST has not been initiated, backout the patch and re-install 112186-17 (firmware 4.15.1).
Once POST is initiated, the system will become unusable. At this point, the I/O board will need to be replaced with one containing a firmware version prior to 4.15.4.
Resolution
This issue is addressed in the following releases:
-
Sun Fire V880/V880Z/V890 with firmware patch 112186-19 or later
