Denial of Service (DoS) Vulnerability in the Solaris e1000g(7D) Gigabit Ethernet Driver

Category :Security
Release Phase :Resolved
Bug Id :6665738
Product :Solaris 10 Operating System
OpenSolaris
Date of Resolved Release :13-Jun-2008

Denial of Service (DoS) Vulnerability in the Solaris e1000g(7D) Gigabit Ethernet Driver

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the Solaris e1000g(7D) Gigabit Ethernet driver on systems with Intel 82571/82572 network interface controllers may allow a remote unprivileged user to block all inbound network packets. This constitutes a Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Solaris 10 without patch 137289-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_22 to snv_92
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 10 without patch 137293-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_19 to snv_92
Notes:

1. Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 are not impacted by this issue.

2. Only OpenSolaris installations including the file /kernel/drv/e1000g.conf file are impacted by this issue.

3. This issue only impacts systems that are using the e1000g Gigabit Ethernet driver for the Intel 82571 or 82572 chipset based NICs. To determine if a system is equipped with one of these chipsets, the following command can be run:

$ prtconf -pv | egrep "8086,(10a4|10a5|10bc|10d5|105e|107d|107e|107f|10b9)"

To determine if a system is equipped with e1000g plumbed interfaces, the following command can be run (as 'root' user):

# dladm show-link|grep e1000g
e1000g0     phys     1500   up       --
e1000g1     phys     1500   unknown  --

4. OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be derived as follows:-

$ uname -a
SunOS hostname 5.11 snv_86 i86pc i386 i86pc

3. Symptoms

There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described vulnerability has been exploited. Should the described issue occur, the system may not receive any network packets on the vulnerable interface. While the system can still send the packets, it may not respond to network connections, causing the system to be unresponsive.

4. Workaround

Should the described issue occur, the network interface can be restored by doing the following (as 'root' user):

# dladm show-link|grep e1000g
# ifconfig <the e1000g interfaces> unmplumb
# modinfo | grep e1000g
# modunload -i <First number from above modinfo i.e the e1000g module id>
# modload <the e1000g module>
# ifconfig <the e1000g interfaces> plumb

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Solaris 10 with patch 137289-01 or later
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_93 or later

x86 Platform

  • Solaris 10 with patch 137293-01 or later
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_93 or later
