Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in ICU 3.2 Library Regular Expression Processing May Cause a Denial of Service (DoS)

1. Impact

Multiple security vulnerabilities in processing regular expressions in the ICU 3.2 library shipped with Solaris may impact applications which make use of this library. Depending on the application, this may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the application via a carefully crafted regular expression which is processed by the application. This may also result in a Denial of Service (DoS) to the application.

These issues can occur in the following releases:

SPARC platform:

• Solaris 9 without patch 114677-15
• Solaris 10 without patch 119810-05

X86 platform:

• Solaris 9 without patch 114678-15
• Solaris 10 without patch 119811-05

Linux

• RHEL Linux 3 without patch 126368-04

Note: The Solaris 8 Operating System is not impacted by these issues.

3. Symptoms

There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described issues have been exploited.

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for these issues. Please see the Resolution section below.

5. Resolution

These issues are addressed in the following releases:

SPARC platform:

• Solaris 9 with patch 114677-15 or later
• Solaris 10 with patch 119810-05 or later

X86 platform:

• Solaris 9 with patch 114678-15 or later

Linux
