Update to the Java Runtime Engine (JRE) Required Due to the Energy Policy Act of 2005

Category :Availability
Release Phase :Resolved
Product :IPStor Software
Date of Resolved Release :20-FEB-2007

Impact

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 mandated that Daylight Savings Time in the United States would be extended, starting 2007, to start three weeks earlier and end one week later than in previous years. Software that automatically calculates daylight savings time should be updated to account for this change.

Sun StorageTek MirrorStore, IPStor, and VTL management software relies on the Java Runtime Engine (JRE). The RedHat v7.3 patch updates the JRE. Running the patch will ensure that local time is correctly calculated.

Additional information on the Daylight Savings Time Change for other products and applications can be found at http://www.sun.com/dst

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

  • MirrorStore without patch update-rh7.3-2.4.21-ipstor-01
  • IPStor Software without patch update-rh7.3-2.4.21-ipstor-01
  • VTL management Software without patch update-rh7.3-2.4.21-ipstor-01

Symptoms

If the described updates are not installed, MirrorStore, IPStor, and VTL management software will not accurately reflect the correct local time for replication schedules, TimeMark snapshots, log files, reports, and client/server synchronization. The impact dates will be from March 11, 2007 to April 1, 2007 and again from October 28, 2007 to November 4, 2007.

Using Network Time Protocol (NTP) will not resolve these issues. Without the patches, local time values will be incorrect for a three-week period. The values will be corrected once the original DST date of April 1, 2007 passes.

Workaround

There is no workaround.
