Impact

Starting in 2007, Daylight Saving Time transition dates have been changed to the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. Switch products are time aware and thus need to have the proper adjustments made to accommodate this change. In several cases, firmware patches are available to fix the issue.

Switches use time for timestamps and logs. In no case will I/O traffic be affected by an error in DST settings. This SunAlert is issued to inform customers that the DST changes are not of significant consequence with respect to switch products.

Contributing Factors

DST changes may affect switches from the following product families:

  • All Brocade (and McDATA) Fibre-channel switches that are time-aware
  • All Cisco Fibre-channel switches that are time-aware
  • All Qlogic Fibre-channel switches that are time-aware, without patch 119553-02 (FW 5.0.1.10)
  • All Sun StorageTek Fibre-channel switches that are time-aware (including AP7420 MPR) without patch 119553-02 (FW 5.0.1.10)

Symptoms

Inaccurate system date and time may be running on the switch, which could lead to errors in timestamps for logs and debug information.

Workaround

In some cases, a work around can be used to manually set the switch clock, which will act as a permanent fix.

For Cisco switches:

DST date set by CLI clock "summer-time" command or by use of a NetworkTimeProtocol (NTP) server.

See Cisco documentation:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_tech_note09186a00807ca437.shtml

Also see Cisco documentation:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/63/dst_recommendations.pdf

For Brocade (McDATA) switches:

Switch time synchronizes to EFCM time. EFCM time is set by the OS on the system on which it runs.

See Brocade (McDATA) documentation:

http://www.mcdata.com/downloads/tpub/caletter/CAL-0018_Daylight_Saving_Time_change.pdf

Resolution

Patches available for some switch products and platforms that address this issue are the following:

  • Brocade switches with FOS 5.2.0a or 5.0.5b (patches 124898-01 or later and 119552-04 or later)
  • Brocade (McDATA) switches - see Relief/Workaround above
  • Cisco switches - see Relief/Workaround above
  • Qlogic switches with FW 5.0.1.10 (as delivered in patch 119553-02 or later)
  • Sun StorageTek switches with FW 5.0.1.10 (as delivered in patch 119553-02 or later)
