1. Impact

A variety of patch and packaging issues for the Solaris 10 Operating System may lead to issues with installing patches, backing out patches, and the execution of packaging commands. Therefore, systems should always have the latest patch and packaging patches installed before adding any further patches.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Solaris 10

x86 Platform

  • Solaris 10

Note: Solaris 7, 8 and 9 are not affected by this issue.


3. Symptoms

There are various symptoms associated with multiple bugs that are logged for this issue.


4. Workaround

Always install the the latest patch and packaging utility patches before performing installation or removal of other patches or packages.


5. Resolution

At the time of publication of this document, the following patches address this issue. However, subsequent patches may be developed to address this issue.

SPARC Platform

  • Patch 119254 (Install and Patch Utilities)
  • Patch 119317 (SVr4 Packaging Commands (usr))
  • Patch 119683 (lib/svc/bin/svc.configd)
  • Patch 121296 (fgrep)
  • Patch 122034 (nawk patch)
  • Patch 124630 (System Administration Applications, Network and Core Libraries Patch)

x86 Platform

Solaris 10

  • Patch 119255 (Install and Patch Utilities)
  • Patch 119318 (SVr4 Packaging Commands (usr))
  • Patch 119684 (lib/svc/bin/svc.configd)
  • Patch 121297 (fgrep)
  • Patch 122035 (nawk patch)
  • Patch 124631 (System Administration Applications, Network and Core Libraries Patch)

NOTES:

1) The issue is not fully resolved and additional patches will be addressing the issue. Please install the most current versions of any patch and packaging patches before performing installation or removal of other patches or packages.

2) On SPARC systems Solaris 10 3/05 and Solaris 10 3/05 HW1 it may not be possible to install the latest revision of 119254 (Install and Patch Utilities).

To overcome this issue it is necessary to first install 119254-06 followed by the current revision of 119254. This issue may also be seen when installing the patch clusters which contain 119254. If this issue occurs, the following message will be seen even when the required patch 121333-02 is present:

    The following requested patches will not be installed because no patches 
    required by the patch are installed on this system.

    0 For patch 119254-24, required patch 121333-02 does not exist.

ADDENDUM:

The issue with installing 119254 was fixed in 119254-28 and later revisions of 119254.
