Description and What's New
The Solaris 9 12/02 Operating Environment builds on the success of the
Solaris 9 OE. Enhancements in the areas of scalability, availability,
manageability and security define the industry leading UNIX(TM)
operating environment. This Solaris 9 update integrates fixes,
performance improvements as well as select new technologies in a
tested easy-to-install configuration, while maintaining guaranteed
binary compatibility with prior Solaris releases. Our commitment to
compatibility ensures the highest level of investment protection for
our customers.

x86 Platform Edition
Through deploying Sun's leading UNIX on PC hardware, users can
leverage code developed for Solaris and open standards and build
infrastructure and solutions based on Sun supported software.

Password Management framework for LDAP
The support for password management in LDAP strengthens the overall
security of the LDAP naming service when used with the Sun ONE
directory server. Specifically this feature:
-Allows for tracking password aging and expiration
-Prevents users from choosing trivial or previously used passwords
-warns users if their passwords are about to expire
-Locks out users after repeated login failures
-Prevents users other than authorized system administrators from
deactivating initialized accounts

Flexible crypt() API for passwords
Password encryption protects passwords from being read by intruders
and strengthens the overall security of the system. Three strong
password encryption mechanisms are now available in the crypt module
-Blowfish version, compatible with BSD systems
-MD5 version, compatible with with BSD and Linux
-Stronger version of MD5, that is compatible with other Solaris
systems

UFS Logging performance enhancements
UFS logging enables faster system reboots. In addition, the
performance of logging UFS file systems exceed the performance of
non-logging UFS file systems in this Solaris release

Network Cache Accelerator multiple instance support
Multiple web-sites can be consolidated and accelerated in a single
Solaris instance. This support enables IP address based virtual
hosting.

Netscape 6.2.3 integrated in the Solaris Operating environment
This version of the tool makes improvements to the earlier version by
delivering increased productivity, efficiency with streamlined
browsing, user tools for completing tasks, power through more choice,
safety with more control, and standards for rich web-based
applications.

X Virtual Screen support
Provides virtual frame buffer support for displays thus enabling
assistive technologies such as windows magnifiers.

International Components for Unicode (ICU)
Delivers broader support for Unicode. Additions include new Unicode
locales for Thailand, India, Hong Kong, Turkey, Egypt, Brazil, Finland
and Belgium
