Description and What's New

This release adds selected product features and updates to the functionality originally provided in the Solaris 8 Operating Environment; Solaris 8 6/00, 10/00 and 01/01 update releases, enhancing its capabilities and reputation as the scalable, available, manageable, trustworthy, connected and comprehensive platform of choice for the Net Effect -- while continuing to maintain compatibility with previous releases of Solaris.
Key Features:
  • WebStart Flash: Faster! Provides functionality to create a  single reference installation of the Solaris Operating Environment.
  • RCM(Reconfiguration Coordination Manager) Public API: Perl scripting interface to Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) operations allowing third parties and system administrators to customize on DR operations.
  • IP Multipathing Module for RCM: Enables easier Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) operations on Network Interface Cards.
  • System ID Default Router: Allows systems to be automatically configured with a specific router gateway.
  • Enhancement to Mobile IP: Mobile IP now allows system administrators to set up reverse tunnels.
  • J2SE 1.3 : Java 2 Standard Edition version 1.3 utilizes HotSpot technology and performance tuned run time libraries to achieve the fastest Java platform to date.
  • Sendmail 8.10: Upgrade to latest version from Sendmail, Inc.
  • Berkley Internet Name Domain (BIND) 8.2.2: New revision includes bug fixes and security fixes, specifically for CERT advisory 99.14. In.named configuration operations. Extension to the
    resolver (3RESOLV) interface that are safe to use in multithreaded applications.
  • Apache Web Server 1.3.12: Updated version.
  • Netscape 4.76 : This version of Netscape incorporates the latest fixes for security vulnerabilities.
  • Appcert : This popular ABI testing toolset is now integrated into the developer metacluster
  • Driver Hardening Test Harness: It tests the resilience of a SPARC-based device driver.
  • Sysevent Public API: This initial API allows for programmatic reading of system event buffers.
  • mp Print Filter Enhancement: The mp print filter can now act as a X Print Server client, this means that it can support any Print Description Language which the X Print Server supports.
  • CDE Desktop Enhancements: Graphical Workspace Manager and the windows list GUI. Includes new features that enables easier application navigation, access, customization, and viewing.
  • UTF(Universal Transformation Format): Turkish UTF-8 Codes and Russian UTF-8 Codes are added to a table of already existing Eastern European locales.
  • Language Support: The File System Safe Universal Transformation Format, or UTF-8, is an encoding defined by X/Open as a multibyte representation of Unicode
  • Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM): The Sun WBEM Software Developer's Toolkit (SDK) enables software developers to create standard based applications that manage resources in the Solaris operating environment.
  • Java 2 SDK Standard Edition v1.3.0: Java HotSpot technology and performance-tuned libraries make J2SE 1.3.0 the fastest Java platform to date. The J2SE 12._07a contains fixes for bugs that were identified in previous releases in the J2SE 1.2 2 series.
  • Writing Device Drivers - SPARC: The driver hardening test harness is a Solaris device driver development tool.
  • Reconfiguration Coordination Manager (RCM): Scripts enable a Solaris system administrator to use a script that cleanly shuts down devices and applications during a dynamic reconfiguration operation.
  • Web Start Flash installation: Enables you to create a single reference installation of the Solaris operating environment on a machine and then replicate that installation on several machines.
