Licensing
Unlike previous versions of the Solaris Operating Environment, there
is no longer a distinction made between Desktop and Server licenses.
In addition, there are also no longer different license classes based
on number of concurrent users.

A base Solaris license is required to run the Solaris 8 Operating
Environment. Sun System Products come with the appropriate Solaris
license, so customers who purchase Sun hardware are automatically
licensed to run the Solaris 8 software.

For OEMs and customers with non-Sun hardware, a Solaris license is
required. License fees vary depending on the hardware configuration
and in some cases - such as the non-commercial licenses offered
through the free Solaris program - are at no charge.
