Solaris[tm] 8 Operating Environment 1/01
Description and What's New
Solaris 8 1/01 adds selected product features and updates to
the functionality originally provided in the Solaris 8
Operating Environment; Solaris 8 6/00 and 10/00 update
release, enhancing its capabilities and reputation as the
scalable, available, manageable, trustworthy, connected and
comprehensive platform of choice for the .com world -- all
while maintaining compatibility with previous releases of
Solaris.
Key Features:
-
Solaris Management
ConsoleTM (SMC) 2.0:
SMC 2.0 is a GUI based "umbrella application" that serves
as the launching point for a variety of management tools.
The SMC comes with a default toolbox. Tools can be added
or deleted from the default toolbox. Also, a different
toolbox containing different set of tools can be created
by using the SMC Toolbox Editor.
-
Diskless Client Management: Diskless client is a
workstation that depends on an OS server, or host, for its
operating system, software, and storage. Diskless client
management consists of a command-line interface. Solaris 8
1/01 update release supports SPARC architecture or IA OS
SERVERS that run the Solaris 8 1/01 operating environment;
and, SPARC architecture diskless clients that run either
the Solaris 8 1/01, Solaris 7, or Solaris 2.6 operating
environments from their OS servers.
-
Role Based Access Control (RBAC): Role based access
control databases can now be managed through the user tool
in the Solaris Management Control graphical interface.
Changes in the RBAC allow ease of configuration and
administration.
-
Improved UFS Direct I/O Concurrency (Quick I/O
equivalent): Solaris 8 1/01 update release allows
concurrent read and write access to regular UFS files. As
databases generally pre-allocate files and seldom extend
them thereafter, the effects of this enhancement are seen
during the normal database operations. The improvement
brings I/O-bound database performance on a UFS file system
to about 90% of raw partition access speeds.
-
UFS Snapshots: Allows customers to take a point in
time snapshot of a UFS file system. UFS snapshot (command:
fssnap) enables the user to keep the file system mounted
and the system in multiuser mode during backups. The
fssnap command gives administrators of
non-enterprise-level systems the power of enterprise-level
tools like SunStorEdgeTM
Instant Image without the large storage demands.
-
New Dynamic reconfiguration Error Messaging: The
Dynamic reconfiguration software has been enhanced in the
Solaris 8 1/01 release to improve troubleshooting
problems.
-
JDKTM
Enhancements: Solaris 8 1/01 release includes the
JDKTM 1.2.2_06 and JDK
1.1.8_12 which are improved with bug fixes since the last
release.
-
Installation Enhancements: During system
identification, the utilities can configure systems to be
LDAP clients. Prior releases allowed the configuration of
the machine only as NIS, NIS+, or DNS clients. The
SolarisTM Web Start 3.0
installation method has been updated to allow modification
of selected Solaris Software Group by adding or removing
software packages.
-
Administering and Uninstalling Software: A new
version of the Solaris Product Registry tool has been
released with Solaris 1/01 release. The new tool includes:
the ability to uninstall individual system packages, all
of the Solaris system products installed in their
localised version appear in the Systems Software
Localizations folder; and , registry is compatible with
more installation wizards.
