1 Preparing the System for Service

1.1 Introduction

This chapter provides the information necessary to prepare the system for servicing. Included are a tool list, safety precautions, system power down, and trim removal and replacement procedures.

1.2 Tools Required

The following list of tools and test equipment represents the minimum requirement for field service of the cabinet.

1.3 Safety Precautions

Ensure that the voltage and frequency of the power outlet used matches the electrical rating labels on the cabinet.

Wear anti-static wrist straps when handling any magnetic storage devices.
Only use properly grounded power outlets as described in the Sun Microsystems Site Preparation Guide manual, P/N 800-5216

Caution - DO NOT make mechanical or electrical modifications to the cabinet. Sun Microsystems is not responsible for regulatory compliance of modified cabinets.

Caution -

Power off the cabinet and all equipment attached to it before proceeding with any of the following procedures as described in Section 1.5, "Graceful Power-Down" of this chapter.

1.4 System Precautions

Warning -

This equipment contains lethal voltage. Accidental contact can result in serious injury or death.

Caution -

Improper handling by unqualified personnel can cause serious damage to this equipment. Unqualified personnel who tamper with this equipment may be held liable for any resultant damage to the equipment.

Individuals who remove any outer panels to access this equipment must observe all safety precautions and ensure compliance with skill level requirements, certification, and all applicable local and national laws.

Procedures contained in this document must be performed by qualified service-trained maintenance providers.

Caution - Before you begin, carefully read each of the procedures in this manual. If you have not performed similar operations on comparable equipment, do not attempt to perform these procedures.

1.5 Graceful Power-Down

Before turning off the system power, you must halt the operating system, or loss of data may occur. Begin by backing up system files and data onto tape. Then, notify system users that the system is going to be shut down. To shut down the system and give users a five-minute shutdown warning, follow these steps:

    1. Back up the system files and data to tape.
    2. Become superuser (root), and enter the password as requested:

    3. Type the following command to shut down the system and notify users that the system is going down in five minutes:

    4. Wait for the system-halted message and the boot monitor prompt:

    5. Turn the system power OFF.

Caution - Turn off the power at the main AC breaker on the rear of the system before you insert or remove disk drives or the power supply. Then, turn off the main power at the switch on the power supply. Do not disconnect the AC power cord from its receptacle.

For more information on system administration such as shut-down methods and backups, refer to the System and Network Administration for the Sun Workstation manual, P/N 800-1323.

1.6 External Cable Removal/Replacement

The Sun SCSI Expansion Pedestal is connected to the host system by data cables and a ground cable. A terminator must be added to the end of each SCSI daisy chain at the Sun SCSI Expansion Pedestal.

Refer to the Sun SCSI Expansion Pedestal Installation Manual, P/N 800-5905, for system wiring configurations and terminator locations.

To remove or replace the cables proceed as follows:

    1. Disconnect each cable from the back panel by squeezing the locking tabs on the sides of the connector body.
    2. Pull the connectors out gently.
    3. Remove the cable from the cable restraints.

Reverse these procedures to replace the external cables.

To remove or replace the terminators proceed as follows:

    1. Remove the terminators from the back panel by squeezing the locking tabs on the sides of the connector body.
    2. Pull the terminator connectors out gently.

Reverse these procedures to replace the external terminators.

1.7 Trim Removal/Replacement

The Sun SCSI Expansion Pedestal outer panels, (shown in figures 1-1 through 1-5), consist of the following parts collectively referred to as trim.

Figure 1-1 shows in detail what you will need to remove before accessing the subassemblies.

    Figure 1-1 Trim Removal/Replacement

Caution - Do not remove the trim panels by grasping the sides, tops, or bottoms, and twisting off. This may result in breakage of the panels or fasteners. Always support the panels during removal and replacement operations.

Note - The top cover, front panel, left and right side panels, rear bezel, and rear bumper snap on and off. You must remove the top cover prior to removing the side panels. The front panel, rear bezel and bumper can be removed without removing other panels.

Removing the Top Cover and Side Panels

Remove the top cover and side panels as shown in Figure 1-2 and Figure 1-3:

    1. Grasp both sides of the top cover near the front of the unit and lift it off the two front ball studs.
    2. Grasp both sides of the top cover near the rear of the unit and lift it off the rear ball studs.

Figure 1-2 Removing the top Cover

Note - At this point the side panels can be removed as shown in Figure 1-3, however it is not necessary to remove the side panels in order to remove the front panel.

    3. With a slotted screwdriver pry outward at the top corners of the side panels to disengage the two upper ball studs.
    4. With a slotted screwdriver pry outward at the middle sides of the side panels to disengage the two middle ball studs.
    5. Pull outward at the lower corners of the side panels to disengage the two lower ball studs.
    6. Remove the side panels.

To replace the top cover and side panels, reverse the above procedure.

Removing the Front Panel and Bumper Assembly

Remove the front panel and bumper assembly as shown in Figure 1-4:

    1. with a slotted screwdriver pry outward at the top corners of the front panel to disengage the two upper ball studs.
    2. with a slotted screwdriver pry outward at the middle sides of the front panel to disengage the two middle ball studs.
    3. Pull outward at the lower corners of the front panel to disengage the lower ball studs that support the panel and bumper assembly.
    4. Remove the front panel and bumper assembly.

To replace the front panel and bumper assembly, reverse the above procedure.

Removing the Tape and Blank Bezels

Remove the Tape or Blank Bezels as shown in Figure 1-5.

The Bezels are a press fit. By exerting gentle pressure to the top surface of the Bezels they are easily removed. There are two tangs on the bottom surface of the Bezels which fit into corresponding slots on the Front Panel and Bumper Assembly.

When installing a SCSI Tape drive or SunCD(TM) a Tape Bezel is installed at each location.

When there is no device loaded in either of the locations in the upper shelf a Blank Bezel is installed there in the Front Panel and Bumper Assembly.

Removing the Rear Bumper and Rear Bezel

Remove the rear bumper and rear bezel as shown in Figure 1-6:

    1. With a slotted screwdriver pry outward at the lower corners of the rear bumper to disengage the two sets of lower ball studs that support the rear bumper, and remove.
    2. With a slotted screwdriver pry outward at the two upper edges of the bezel to disengage the two ball studs.
    3. Pull outward at the lower corners of the bezel to disengage the lower ball studs.
    4. Remove the rear bezel.

To replace the rear bumper and rear bezel, reverse the above procedure.

1.8 Secure Installation Procedures

The Sun SCSI Expansion Pedestal has been equipped with threaded inserts for securing the cabinet permanently. As shown in Figure 1-7 there are four 1/4-20 threaded inserts in the exterior base of the cabinet. Sun Microsystems, Inc. does not provide any additional hardware beyond the inserts. To utilize this feature the customer provides additional hardware such as levelling feet or brackets.
